IGS Nordic Branch Meeting 2019
30 October - 1 November 2019, Fosshótel Reykholt, Iceland
The field excursion is to the 550-m-long glacier tunnel at 1300 m a.s.l. on Langjökull ice cap (intotheglacier.is). The particicants will be driven from Reykholt to Húsafell where they board modified glacier vehicles specially made to transport groups to the glacier tunnel. Depending on weather, the bus ride on the glacier gives the participants an excellent view of the west side of the Langjökull ice cap and its foreland as well as the beautiful Borgarfjörður region. The tunnel, which goes as deep as 40 m below the glacier surface, provides an opportunity to inspect the annual snow layers, the transformation of snow to firn and then to ice with increasing depth as well as up to 2 m wide crevasses cut through by the tunnel.
Excursion to ice tunnel on Langjökull ice cap: £65
