“Glacial landsystems: modern polar and alpine analogues for Quaternary palaeoglaciology”

Dr. David J A Evans, Professor of Quaternary Environmental Change, Durham University, England

Short description of talk:

This talk will focus on the use of modern analogues for palaeoglaciological reconstruction, concentrating specifically on the glacial geomorphology of Icelandic deglaciated forelands. The landsystems concept is used in the compilation of modern analogues, thereby employing a conceptual process-form model approach to the interpretation of ancient glaciated landscapes. A range of glacier styles selected from the Icelandic landscape, including active temperate snouts, plateau icefields and surging glaciers, are identified and classified using the landsystems approach, and then applied to ancient glacial settings in North America, Britain and New Zealand.
