IGS Nordic Branch Meeting 2014
30 October - 1 November 2014, Hotel Dyrhólaey, Iceland
1. November 2014 - Saturday excursion - (£35)
We leave after lunch on Saturday and travel by bus to Gígjökull. We will hike across the 'former' lagoon' that disappeared during the first days of the Eyjafjallajökull eruption and view the glacier.
After leaving Gígjökull we will briefly stop at Seljalandsfoss. We will then travel l to Gestastofan at Þorvaldseyri where there is a museum commemorating the Eyjafjallajökull eruption in 2010, before returning to Hótel Dyrhólaey. We expect to be back at the hotel about 18:00.
We will organise either rental cars or a bus (depending on numbers) to take people back to Reykjavík both before or after the excursion.
You will need good hiking boots and waterproof clothing. This excursion involves 1 hour of hiking on level terrain. Afternoon refreshments (including a vegetarian option) are included.
2. November 2014 - Sunday excursion - (£120/£140)
This is a longer excursion where we venture further afield. The itinerary will depend on the weather. We will leave the hotel at 09:00 and if the weather is favourable we will go into Þakgil and from there go on a hike to view Kötlujökul and Huldufjöll with a local guide.
If the weather and general travel conditions are bad (remember this is November) we will concentrate on Sólheimajökull and possibly also go to the beach at Reynishverfi.
En-route to Reykjavík we are planning to go swimming, possibly in Hveragerði, so bring your swimming gear.
We expect to be in Reykjavík no later than 19:00.
You will need good hiking boots and waterproof clothing. This excursion involves 3 hours of hiking in mountainous terrain. A packed lunch (and a vegetarian option) is included.
If you are also going on the Sunday excursion, dinner and accommodation on Saturday night is included in the price (total of £120 per person in shared room or £140 per person in single room).
Registration for the field excursions is now open at the IGS web site.
