COVER: Eruption plume from the 2011 subglacial eruption of Grímsvötn, Iceland. The white steam column generated by vaporization of glacial water can be clearly distinguished from the brown ash-laden plume. The mechanisms of fine ash generation during subglacial eruptions are discussed in “The role of bubbles in generating fine ash during hydromagmatic eruptions” by Liu et al., p. 239–242.
