Abstract:

This talk will relate my experience during the six weeks field expedition I took part in last summer, studying volcanic emissions of the Vanuatu arc (south Pacific). The Volcano Waka Lab project, led by a New Zealand-based colleague, aims at characterizing the volatile emissions from the Vanuatu arc. Many of these volcanoes, despite being major and long-lived gas emitters, are poorly known, owing to their remoteness and difficult access. The use of a waka, a traditional Polynesian double-hulled canoe, as our mobile volcano laboratory was key to the project. I will describe the project and our field campaign, talking about the challenges, the type of data and samples collected, the logistics, and presenting the five volcanoes we visited.

All are welcome.
