Abstract:

The subsurface carbonation of CO2 by its reactions with basaltic or ultramafic rocks is a promising technology for permanent CO2 disposal. A major challenge to applying this process at scale is that it requires 20 to 50 times more water than the mass of CO2 stored. To overcome this challenge, we developed a new CO2 injection approach based on the recirculation of subsurface fluids, which effectively eliminates the need for external water. Demonstrated in Jizan, Saudi Arabia, this method achieved 70% mineralization of 131 tons of CO2 injected into 21- to 30-million-year-old basalts within ten months. Our results, thereby, demonstrate the feasibility of effective carbon mineralization in regions of our planet where access to water resources may be limited.
