Abstract:
In 2025 the United Nations Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS) decided its recommendation for the limits of the continental shelf of Iceland on the Reykjanes Ridge, after a 16-year-long evaluation period:
The recommended outer limits lie south of the Bight Fracture Zone, more than 1000 km from Iceland. The talk will explain the procedure and argumentation for this decision and how it is based heavily on the nature of hot spot – ridge interaction in Iceland and the Reykjanes Ridge area, considering topography/bathymetry, residual basement depth, V-shaped ridges, magnetic and gravity fields, crustal thickness, geochemistry and petrology, seismicity, and geodynamical models. Questions, comments and discussion on the nature of the Reykjanes Ridge are welcome.
All are welcome.
